Discovering The Coastal Charm of Rhode Island: Matunuck Oyster Bar
Growing up a New England native who is a major foodie working in food marketing, I feel as though I have the credentials to throw some input on what the best restaurant is in Rhode Island.
Nestled along the picturesque coast of South County, Rhode Island is what might be New England’s best kept secret; Matunuck, RI. The charming coastal village known for its stunning beaches and vibrant local scene makes it a perfect getaway for both relaxation and divine cuisine. One of the most beloved gathering places for the local community and tourists is Matunuck Oyster Bar. Residents and visitors alike come together to celebrate the state’s (and probably region’s) best seafood restaurant.
Matunuck Oyster Bar
Matunuck Oyster Bar specializes in fresh, farm-to-table seafood, with a particular focus on locally-sourced oysters and shellfish harvested from the pristine waters of Rhode Island.

Let’s review the menu, shall we?
Perry Raso, owner of Matunuck Oyster Bar focuses on providing an authentic taste of New England. Creating a menu that highlights the region’s rich maritime heritage and culinary traditions, let’s review what you should order on your next visit.
Mini Tuna Tartare Tacos. This bite-sized delight is a vibrant and flavorful appetizer. Featuring fresh, sushi-grade tuna nestled in a crispy tortilla shell (which can be accommodated to be gluten-friendly) this is one of those apps you will want to order multiple of.
Caviar. Ordering caviar in Rhode Island is a must for any seafood lover looking to elevate their dining experience. Especially at Matunuck Oyster Bar, caviar provides a luxurious taste with its rich, briny flavor, and delicate texture. It pairs beautifully with the restaurant’s fresh, local oysters and scenery. Enjoying caviar in a charming waterside setting allows you to savor the essence of the ocean in every bite.
Clam Chowder. Served warm and comforting, this New England classic captures the spirit of coastal dining. Need I say more?
Oysters. Sourced directly from their very own oyster farm, each slurp offers a unique taste of the ocean - perfectly complemented by house-made mignonette and cocktail sauce, making for an authentic and memorable seafood experience.
Lobster Roll. So you aren’t from around here? Once you indulge in the decadent taste of a hot or cold roll, you’ll be searching Zillow for a beach house. This quintessential dish celebrates the restaurant’s commitment to sourcing the finest local seafood.
Clams and Linguine. Featuring tender clams tossed with perfectly cooked linguine in a savory garlic and white wine sauce. It will beautifully enhance your visit to “M.O.B.” yes, M.O.B. that’s what the locals say. I don’t mean it in a Tony Soprano way, its just the acronym for Matunuck Oyster Bar.
Seared Scallops. This dish ranks second for me at M.O.B. The scallops are expertly prepared to highlight their natural sweetness and delicate texture. The seasonal variations allow you to experience the freshest ingredients and flavors available at any given time. Each presentation reflects the creativity of the chef and the bounty of the local waters.
The best dish at Matunuck Oyster Bar
Every single time I visit Matunuck Oyster Bar, this dish is always ordered. Someone at the table came prepared, already knowing they were going to order this because it is crave-worthy.
The Blackened Yellowfin Tuna
You simply cannot get this dish anywhere else. It showcases the perfect balance of bold spices, fresh, high-quality fish, delivering a deliciously smoky and savory flavor that highlights the tuna’s natural richness. This dish stands out as the best on the menu due to its expertly seared exterior, tender and succulent interior. Paired with creamy mashed potatoes, fire-roasted sweet pepper relish, and a creole mustard cream sauce, truly no other restaurant in New England, or even in the country (that I’ve been to) can have an entree compare to the Blackened Yellowfin Tuna.
Cocktails You Can’t Miss:
While they do an outstanding job curating their seasonal cocktails, here are some classics that the restaurant does a wonderful job shaking up:
The Matunuck Martini
Hugo Spritz
Espresso Martini
Spicy Margarita
Old Fashioned
Bloody Mary
Extra Dirty Martini
Plan Your Visit
The best time of the year to visit Matunuck Oyster Bar is hands down in the Summer months so you can truly capture a coastal New England Summer. You will want to make sure you reserve a table, as it is probably South County’s busiest restaurant. However, if you want to capture this beauty off season, you will still be able to feel transported into a delicate New England experience.
Enjoy your visit to beautiful Matunuck, Rhode Island and treat yourself to a visit at the one and only Matunuck Oyster Bar.
